The tactics provided by coach Gregg Berhalter once again was thrown off the books after Columbus Crew went behind in a game once again.
The club are largely seen in the mid-table due to their inability to shut down the opposition early on. Columbus Crew have been chasing several games during the 2015 MLS campaign and it was once again the case in the recent match against Montréal Impact. The team went down 2-0 after just eight minutes of the start. Even though the team was able to pick up some momentum after this disappointment, they were unable to get back even with almost 80 minutes of game time.
The damage had already been done because of the poor start andBerhalter says that this is something that the team needs to address immediately. There is a danger for Columbus Crew the teams like New England Revolution and even Philadelphia Union will be able to capitalise on this poor form. A run of just two wins in the last five matches mean that there are four teams separated by just goal difference in the Eastern conference. Columbus Crew went on to lose the match 3-0 with Oduro providing the final goal that was humiliating for the team.
“It puts us in a difficult position. Going 2-0 down that early in the game … from us it wasn’t good. It wasn’t an acceptable performance,” said the coach. “This is a trend we’re having, it’s not the trend we want. We come out with the right mentality and then we give up an early one. When you do that against a good team like Montreal, it’s going to be tough to climb back on the road. We shot ourselves in the foot. The first one [was] five minutes in and then we just couldn’t recover from it,” said midfielders Finlay and Meram.
