Liverpool star Ricki Lambert says that the club can win the Europa League this season. Such a victory will provide them with the passage into the group stages of the Champions League straightaway.
The Merseyside outfit will be aware that this remains as the only hope of reaching the knockout stages of the prestigious competition. This is because the Reds find themselves outside the top four with clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, and Southampton favourites with just over 10 matches left in the season.
Even though Liverpool have suffered just one defeat in the last 16 matches of all competitions, they are not being backed by the bookmakers for a top four finish. Lambert has struggled for goals since his £ 4 million move from Southampton, but the England international has provided some crucial goals for the team. The 33-year-old has found the back of the net only twice in the Premier league, but most of his 18 appearances have come from the bench. After having played 730 minutes of action, he has scored only thrice.
Even though Liverpool will now be playing two matches every week, Lambert is set to remain as the backup after the return of Daniel Sturridge to first-team action.
Liverpool have a difficult match against Besiktas in the knockout stages of the Europa League.”We’d been waiting for so many years to get into the Champions League so we were desperate to stay in it.But we weren’t playing well when the Champions League was there. If we’d just managed to sneak through, who knows what we would have been able to do now.Like I knew we were going to, we’re playing at our best again now. We’re in the Europa League and it’s something that we’ll be trying to win,” said the former Southampton man.
