Vancouver Whitecaps have been unable to get the best out of striker Darren Mattocks this season. The forward has managed no goals in the five matches he has played, but despite this poor run of form, the club are not giving up their faith in him. Manager Carl Robinson has sensationally claimed that Mattocks has been great for the club this season despite not scoring so far. He says that scoring goals is not the only requirement of a striker. On the other hand, Mattocks has been working incredibly hard, while he has also helped his teammate’s linkup much better with his intelligent movement.
It is extremely hard to defend against the statements made by Robinson because Vancouver Whitecaps have made a strong start to the season after being unbeaten in the first four matches of the campaign. This has put them third in the table – just two points behind table leaders FC Dallas. Robinson has warned that it will not be long before Mattocks returns to form and he only needs the luck to change in his favour in order to do so. The manager has also claimed that the club are not worrying about the lack of goalscoring touch from Mattocks as long as the team is winning.
“He’s been great. He really has. His work ethic’s been fantastic. His team play has been second to none, and no, he hasn’t got any goals as of yet, but I think once one goes in off his backside or he scores, then a flow will come. But Darren’s been great so far, obviously, without the goals, but that’ll come. I don’t care who scores. Jay DeMerit can be the top goal scorer in the team for all I care, as long as we win games of football,” said the Vancouver Whitecaps manager.
