Luke Shaw compares his body-build to Wayne Rooney’s

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has stressed that his body has never been out of shape and his figure could be compared to former Red Devil Wayne Rooney. Shaw has struggled to secure a regular role under Jose Mourinho owing to concerns regarding his attitude and fitness but he is keen to prove a point during the upcoming campaign.

Speaking to The Guardian, he said: “People think because of the way I’m naturally built I’m bigger than I am. People can say I’m fat but I know my own body. Of course, I always look big because I’m bigger built. You could say a Wayne Rooney type of body. But of course I worked hard and not just for them [the critics], I wanted to for myself, get in the best shape and that wasn’t my best shape.”

Prior to the Red Devils’ United States’ tour, Shaw had gone through a vigorous conditioning camp in Dubai to prepare himself and he has now been assured of a final chance to prove his worth under Mourinho. With Ashley Young still on vacation following his World Cup exploits, Shaw is more or less certain to start the league opener against Leicester City and his performance during the curtain raiser may make-or-break his last opportunity with the club.

Meanwhile, Shaw’s decision to stay put for the final year of his contract has supposedly ending United’s interest in signing a new left-back and the focus has now shifted towards bolstering the central defence before next month’s transfer deadline. Both Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire have been associated with United in recent weeks and the decision to bring either could go down to the wire with the hefty fees involved. Both players are said to cost at least £65m and United may need to offload an existing centre-back first before pushing through a move.
