There has been a lot of questions asked about the fitness situation of US national team defender, Omar Gonzalez, but he has claimed that he is in great shape right now. It has been a tough 12 months for the defender, who is regarded as one of the linchpins at the back for the US national team. The participation of the defender of the World Cup 2014 looked in major doubt when he suffered an injury after the friendly match against Mexico. Gonzalez was included as part of the provisional squad for the World Cup 2014 by manager Jurgen Klinsmann, which suggested that the manager still had faith in him.
Ahead of the naming of the final squad, Gonzalez has claimed that he is 100% fit and ready to take part in the World Cup. Klinsmann is rumoured to be considering a young squad for the World Cup in order to look into future. The prospects of USA reaching the knockout stages of the competition look extremely difficult due to a tough group stage. They will be coming up against Portugal, Germany, and Ghana in the group stages. Gonzalez recently featured in the LA Galaxy reserve team. This was his first appearance since suffering a knee injury just over a month ago.
“I’m feeling great. I’m involved in all the trainings now, and I’m happy about that. It was a bit frustrating being on the sideline for the first couple of days, but now that I’m back I’m happy to be working hard with the guys and practices have been really intense and fun. The scrimmage for me was good. I played the second 30 minutes, and I felt good, I felt strong – it was definitely a step in the right direction,” said the defender from the training camp for the national team.
