MLS getting more Clubs for their League

Lately, it’s starting to seem like the MLS is only getting bigger and bigger as more clubs are entering the league and new stadiums are being built as well as high profile players making their way and testing their luck by playing football in United States which isn’t such a predominant place for the sport.

Frank Lampard and Ricardo Kaka are the more well-known players that are going to be joining the MLS in 2015 and while David Beckham is not having such a smooth transition in his journey of earning a proper permit that would allow him to construct a stadium for his Miami franchise expansion team, there are others that are having it much easier as the District of Columbia Council approved a deal which is worth around $310 million that would allow D.C. United to have a stadium to be built. Continue reading →

MLS GROWING

The MLS is going through a growth with new clubs being introduced into the American League. By 2015, the MLS will be debuting 2 new teams which are going to be New York City FC and Orlando City but the board of directors has also approved Los Angeles and Atlanta as those last 2 clubs will be entering the MLS in 2017.

After all of these clubs have completed their process of entering the MLS, the league will have a total of 22 teams but even more teams will be added on with David Beckham also trying to be the owner of a club in the MLS and now all that is left for the former Manchester United star to do is get the approval of building a new stadium in Miami.

The staff members of the MLS have expressed their desire on various occasions of expanding their league by 2020 and have a total of 24 teams by that year. They are already taking bids and considering which club will take the 24th spot. If David Beckham does get approval for the construction of the stadium of his franchise team, that club will be the 23rd in the MLS.

The 24th spot of the MLS is expected to be contested between Sacramento and Minnesota with both sides having to make their official presentation and launch their respective pitches in front of other MLS league owners on December 6th at the site of the host city of the MLS Cup championship game. The decision on which team will become the 24th of the MLS will not be officially made until 2015.

Las Vegas has also launched an official bid and will also be competing with Minneapolis and Sacramento to turn into the 24th MLS club.

DC DEFEAT

DC United suffered a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of the MLS cup semi-final against New York Red Bulls. This defeat has put them on the verge of being knocked out of the competition, but head coach Ben Olsen continues to remain defiant about his team’s opportunities. DC United were expected to struggle in this away match against one of the top teams in MLS. They were unable to hold on at least for a draw after conceding a goal in each half. The first goal came in the 43rd minute courtesy of McCarty. In their efforts to chase the game, DC United suffered another setback when Luyindula scored in the 73rd minute.

History does not appear to DC United much of a chance since only two teams have managed to come back from a two-goal deficit in the first leg and got to the next round. Despite this statistic, Olsen told our Yacht Charter Scotland manager-come-football-Journalist that he feels his team has a chance if they managed to make an early goal in the second leg. United have come through several tough situations over the course of 2014, but this could be their biggest yet. United not only have score two goals, but three in order to get back into the tie.

“We have broken through plenty of ceilings. Again, I think we – and I’m included in that – we’ll go back and try to fix a few things and get ready for the game [in DC on Saturday afternoon]. This thing isn’t over. Know that. I do believe in the resiliency of this team and the staff, so I have no doubt we’ll make a real push and make things real interesting,” said Olsen. “What gives me hope is the fact that there are a bunch of warriors on this team,” said goalkeeper Bill Hamid.

RAPIDS SIGN SANCHEZ

Colorado Rapids have managed to bring in Vicente Sanchez to their ranks. The Uruguay striker is rated as one of the finest players from his country. The 33-year-old will also provide a lot of experience to the team. He has played 31 matches for the national team and has scored five goals in the process. Colorado Rapids have been on an impressive run of form recently. They have been able to go on a seven match unbeaten run that sees them near the top of the table. Even though they have played a game more than the table leaders Real Salt Lake, they are just three points off the top of the table.

Hence, there is a real belief within the team that they can win the title this season and it has been just increased following the arrival of Sanchez. The summer transfer window will be closing shortly and manager Oscar Pareja has revealed that he is happy to welcome the forward into the squad. Sanchez has played in some of the best competitions and leagues. He has featured for the likes of Schalke in the German league, which have also helped him to make appearances in the UEFA Champions League as well.

“Vicente is an experienced, professional player who can help this team both on the field and in the locker room. He has performed at a high level in some of the top leagues in the world, even at his most recent club in Uruguay. We’re happy to welcome him into the group,” said Pareja in a statement after the arrival of the 33-year-old. The striker also has the experience of playing in competitions like the Europa league, Copa Sudamericana, and Copa Libertadores. Deshorn Brown is currently the leading goal scorer in the team with six goals to his name.

DISAPPOINTED

Portland Timbers manager Caleb Porter was visibly disappointed after the 2-2 draw with Chicago Fire, which meant that the team could not continue their good run of form in recent months. Portland Timbers have been one of the inform teams in the division since the start of the new season. They have managed to suffer just one defeat in all the matches they have played this season. They were coming into the match against Chicago Fire following a 5-1 thrashing of Wilmington Hammerheads in the US open cup.

Hence, they were expected to be at their best and get all three points from this match. A 2-2 draw was the best they could achieve from the match. Even more disappointing for the manager was the fact that they conceded two goals in the second half to drop the points. Portland opened the scoring in the match with a goal from Váleri in the 33rd minute. Zemanski then appear to have given Portland all three points from the encounter after scoring just before the hour mark. However, Porter and his men were in for a shock after Magee pulled one back in the 68th minute.

The comeback was completed in the 82nd minute with a goal from Paladini. Still, Portland maintain the impressive unbeaten run.

“Even at 2-0, the game isn’t done. With the way we were playing, there was absolutely no reason for that team to get a goal. They got a goal out of nothing. It wasn’t like they had a flow or anything. It popped up in a moment, and we fell asleep. Well, we went up 2-0, and to be honest with you, it looked like it was going to be three or four. They caught us on a counter-attack. The fact that we can learn a lesson without losing a game, I think it’s a very positive thing,” said Porter.

LA FACE CHICAGO

Los Angeles Galaxy will play its first match of the new MLS season against Chicago Fire on Sunday.  That match will be played at the Home Depot Center which is the home ground of Los Angeles Galaxy.

Galaxy has won the MLS Championship in the last two seasons and they will be looking to complete the treble this time around. However, they will go into the opening match without two of their superstars i.e. David Beckham and Landon Donovan.

Beckham left the club at the end of the last season, while, Donovan is currently on an extended leave and he is expected to miss the first couple of matches.

Meanwhile, the manager of Los Angeles Galaxy, Bruce Arena, has appointed Robbie Keane as the captain of the team. Keane will replace Landon Donovan who had been captaining the team since 2008.

Arena has made it clear that Keane has been appointed as the skipper for the entire season.

Arena said, “We have decided to appoint Robbie Keane as the skipper. He will captain the team till the end of the season. He had performed brilliantly in the last season. So, he is a confident player right now.  Also, he has got decent leadership skills. So, he is the right man for this job.”

Keane’s performance for Galaxy in the last MLS season was outstanding. He had found the net 16 times and had also assisted nine goals. These stats clearly suggest that Keane was in great form in the last season.

Because of Keane’s superb performance, the Galaxy management decided to extend his contract in January this year.

In January, Keane had the opportunity to play for the Premier League clubs on loan, but, he didn’t do that. He preferred to rest so that he could get rid of small niggles and could get mentally fresh for the next season.
